Residential Pool Renovation
What to Expect During Your Pool Renovation
At Clarkson Pools, our residential pool renovation process is designed to be seamless, keeping your project on time and within budget. Renovating your pool is a construction project, and we approach it with the same care and coordination as a new build. The process involves heavy equipment, multiple crews, and detailed planning to make sure everything is done right. Your backyard will temporarily become a jobsite, but our experienced team will guide you every step of the way.
Once the planning is complete, we carefully manage the entire renovation — from demolition and removal to resurfacing, tile, coping, and finish work. Your dedicated project manager will keep you informed, ensure quality at every stage, and make sure the final result meets the Clarkson standard.
Things to Consider in Your Pool Renovation Process
When undergoing a pool renovation, there are some things that are inherent in any renovation process. The following list is a few things to consider as well as things one may not realize we do:
Unforeseen Changes
Common Delays
Access & Product Staging
Residential Pool Renovation Services We Offer
When it comes to residential pool renovations, no two projects are the same. Clarkson Pools provides a full range of services — from equipment upgrades and resurfacing to adding new features like spas, sunshelves, or waterfalls. Below are some of the most common renovation options we offer:
Dual Main Drains
Florida building codes require multiple suction points or unblockable drains with approved covers. During a pool renovation, if your pool has a single main drain, we’ll update it to meet code by:
- Adding a second main drain with an approved cover
- Installing an unblockable drain with an approved cover
- Installing a Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS)
If your drains already meet code, we’ll simply update the covers.
Leak Detection
Before starting any residential pool renovation, we recommend performing a leak detection test. This includes checking the pool structure itself and pressure-testing the plumbing to identify hidden issues early.
Cracks in Pool Interior
Cracks can often be repaired during the re-plaster process. Depending on severity, repairs may involve torque-locks, pressure grout, or other structural solutions. Note: repairs cannot be guaranteed unless the pool shell is fully replaced.
Pool Equipment
During most pool renovations, the equipment is shut down for weeks or months. When restarted, older equipment can fail, so we recommend:
- Filter: Replace internal components once the new plaster finish has cured.
- Pump: Budget for replacing the filter pump if needed after renovation.
- Upgrades: Consider energy-efficient systems and re-piping for easier maintenance and lower operating costs.
Chlorination System
Older pools often lack automated chlorination. During pool renovation, it’s easy to upgrade with:
- Salt-Chlorine Generators: Softer water, easier maintenance.
- UV Ozone Systems: Adds disinfection, reduces chlorine demand.
In-Floor Cleaning System
If your pool has existing in-floor cleaning system, here are some things to consider.
- Replacing Collars – If you do not replace the collars, the heads will be in a divot and not work as well as before.
- Color – If the color of your interior is changing, the old collars will not match the new fittings.
- Replacing Heads – If you do not replace the heads, they may not function as well as before.
- Color – If the color of your interior is changing, it may not match the collars and fittings. For Example, if you are going from white to dark blue interior, white heads will drastically stand out verses changing collars and heads to a dark gray.
- Water Valve – If your system is currently not working, often times the module is in need of replacing. We strongly recommend that you budget for or plan on replacing the module during the pool renovation process.
Interior Finishes
- Pebble Finish – is a finish with natural pebble aggregate mixed in to increase durability and enhance light and dark colors. This product is considered the most durable product available. This product features a limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.
- Standard Quartz – an alternative to marcite, combines enriched white Portland cement and colorful, ceramic-coated quartz aggregates. Generally, this product has a 5 year warranty.
- Hydrazzo – a higher quality and smoother quartz finish available in very light, white based colors. Glass aggregate can be added as an option. Generally, this product has a 10 year warranty.
Waterline Tile
While optional, we strongly recommend updating waterline tile during resurfacing since existing tile is often damaged or discontinued. Replacing during the renovation ensures a seamless finish.
Pool Deck
Common residential pool renovation deck upgrades include:
- Acrylic Resurfacing: Refresh existing concrete decks.
- Remodel Paver Overlays: Install 1” pavers over existing deck with remodel coping.
- Full Deck Replacement: New coping + pavers, ideal for major renovations with spas or sunshelves.
- Drainage Updates: Replace, expand, or add drainage to improve long-term performance.
Spa Additions
Add a fully integrated, in-ground concrete spa as part of your residential pool renovation. This involves excavation, plumbing, shotcrete, and finishing, along with new equipment for heating and jets.
Sunshelf Additions
Sunshelves create shallow lounging areas for kids or in-pool seating. Adding one requires excavation, steel, plumbing, and new finishes — much like building a small pool.
Water Feature Additions
Enhance your pool with new water features such as waterfalls, scuppers, bubblers, and deck jets. These can be added during deck renovations or as part of a larger pool renovation project.
